Chondroitin sulfate is a major component of connective tissue and is widely used to promote healthy joints and flexibility. Chondroitin Sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (acid muco-polysaccharide) found in connective tissue, especially in the articular cartilage of all mammals. Chondroitin Sulfate acts similarly as Glucosamine Sulfate, since it also provide substrate for proteoglycans.

Chondroitin Sulfate is a very heterogeneous natural polysaccharide in terms of structure, molecular mass, biological and pharmacological properties. Chondroitin Sulfate is actually classified as a symptomatic slow-acting drug, a compound that has a slow onset of action in alleviating osteoarthritis Symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory activity and capacity to affect cartilage metabolism. It has the capacity to interact with tissue and cellular components due to the presence of numerous negative charges on the carbohydrate backbone.

Chondroitin also protects existing healthy cartilage from premature decline by preventing the MMP (Matrix metalloproteinase) enzyme that breaks down the proteoglycans. It is also helpful during the repair phase of musculo-skeletal soft tissue injuries such as tendon or ligament strains.
